The best first aid apps for iPhone

There are a number of first aid apps available for the iPhone, here’s a roundup of the best first aid apps available!

First aid by British Red Cross (free)

This comprehensive first aid app by the British Red Cross covers a number of everyday first aid emergencies. It’s totally free to download and available for Android and Blackberry users. The app also has useful information about a number of other emergency situations such as road traffic accidents, severe weather, flooding etc.

There are step-by-step instructions for each emergency situation, as well as videos and pictures to show each procedure.

With videos, interactive quizzes and simple step-by-step advice, it’s never been easier to learn first aid.

St John Ambulance First Aid (free)

The St John Ambulance app is similar to the British Red Cross one listed above. It has illustrated step by step instructions for a number of emergency situations including bleeding, burns and broken bones. St John Ambulance is the UK’s largest first aid charity and part of the wider Order of St John movement.

St John Ambulance is urging iPhone users to download the app so that they have the first aid information they need to save a life or provide support while waiting for help to arrive, particularly important during winter months when ambulance waiting times may be longer.

British Heart Foundation PocketCPR (free)

The British Heart Foundation have recently released their “PocketCPR” app for iPhone and Android. This release comes shortly after their successful Hands Only CPR campaign (which starred Vinnie Jones!)

Now this app is special, obviously it has the standard instructions for doing hands only CPR, there’s also a video to walk you through what to do. However, incredibly, it has a real-time feedback system for when you actually have to do CPR. The app will tell you if your chest compressions are too fast / slow and whether they are too shallow. Shallow chest compressions are ineffective, so its really important to get the depth right.

Pretty nifty and definitely worth a download, well done BHF!

Pocket First Aid & CPR from the American Heart Association ($3.99)

Whilst not free, this app costs less than a large cup of coffee. Created by the American Heart Association, this app has useful first aid information for both major and minor injuries & conditions. There is also a handy medical profile / in case of emergency feature which can be accessed by ambulance crews/first responders if something was to happen to you.

These are definitely useful apps for those that are on the go, and have their smartphones used militantly! It’s really important that others are able to access information on the fly in order to have a supplementary aid to assess certain situation. The Pocket First Aid app from the American Heart Association totally sounds like a worthy investment, especially when trained individuals can inform others on anything that may happen to them.

Of course, for the other apps, nothing beats having the full manual, but for having information readily available to you so you can make the difference between life and death is always crucial. These are some wonderful apps, and I’ll be sure to add them to my collection, thanks a lot!

I’m going to have to download all of these.
I think these will be extremely helpful and reassuring.
I think it should be encouraged that when in a real emergency situation, one should not go to an app. Call 911 no matter what.
